Women’s Voices in AI

Women are inadequately represented, especially in the technology industry. This has a detrimental impact in areas like machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) because biased input is a major concern. In honor of International Women's Day, we conducted a panel discussion to examine the significance of women's voices and representation in AI.

Women in Tech at idealo

We strongly believe that diverse teams lead to better and sustainable business success, develop more innovative spirit, and positively influence the corporate culture. However, women are highly underrepresented in technical positions - and we want to change that! We want to support more women to move into tech careers, bring them into our Tech & Product Teams as well as promote and make them more visible, thus closing the gender gap in tech.

For more diversity in the tech industry: idealo hosted the Women in Tech Global Impact Summit Berlin 2022

Over 120 participants attended the WomenTech Global Impact Summit 2022 hosted by idealo and Axel Springer on June 10 in Berlin. The event brought together women in the tech industry, minorities, and allies from Berlin and the surrounding area. The event’s livestream allowed women from all over the world to participate and interact in the chat. 

Besides exciting keynotes and a panel discussion, the participants were given the opportunity to exchange ideas and network with the companies present. In addition to Axel Springer and idealo, Ladenzeile, Upday, and Zalando were also present. The event ended with great conversations on the roof terrace. 

Product & Technology at idealo

As the largest department at idealo, Product & Technology develops a perfect buying experience for smart price comparisons in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, and the UK from over 350 million offers. For this purpose, our Software Engineers, Product Owners, Product Analysts, Data Engineers, Data Analysts, User Researchers, and UX/UI Designers ensure the high-performance processing of incoming offers and continuous price updates. Features such as wishlist and price alert help our users to decide on the right product. The idealo user account makes shopping convenient. From search to checkout!

Our Product & Technology organization focuses on our customers and their needs. It enables us as a tech organization to grow and drive essential projects forward. With a Domains and Product Areas setup, we can work closely with the business counterparts on projects that directly make a difference for our users and partners.

idealo's Commitment to a gender balanced leadership

Today, 42% of idealo's employees are women. If we look only at the management levels, i.e. all idealos with leadership responsibility, the current share of women from the team leads up to our top management is 38% (per August 2022). 

This is already significantly higher than the national average of 27% (in 2021) in Germany. Still, if we want to contribute to diversity and fair representation at idealo and in our society, we cannot be satisfied with the current status. 

Therefore, as part of the Axel Springer Group's Gender Balanced Leadership (GBL) Initiative, we have set ourselves the goal of increasing the proportion of women in leadership at idealo to 44% by 2026. (German press release, Sept 9th, 2021)

We are confident that we can become more diverse and successful with the actions taken and changes at the management levels. Therefore, we currently see the focus on management positions as the most effective lever for more diversity and inclusion across all dimensions.
